About Captions and Transcriptions

Designing videos for maximum accessibility enhances your content for all viewers. Captions are the key to accessibility, and should be considered for all videos aimed at audiences inside or outside of VCU. While the Video Production and Teleconferencing team does not provide captioning as a service directly, we can recommend several resources to assist you.

VCU's office of Student Accessibility and Educational Opportunity (SAEO) has a great Faculty Guide to Captioning and Accessible Videos to help guide you on when and how to caption your content.

You're also encouraged to consult VCU's Web Standards and Guidelines for additional guidance.

Kaltura

Any videos we produce for university clients can be uploaded to Kaltura for long-term hosting. Kaltura automatically generates machine-made captions via automated speech recognition, with 70-80% accuracy. If desired, you can also request human-generated captions for complete accuracy as detailed here.

Live Captioning Options

Events live streamed via VCU Kaltura server can be captioned with the assistance of a third-party vendor such as ALS Global or Caption First, with trained transcriptionists who can view the live stream and add captions in real time.
