Lecture Capture in Supported Classrooms
Zoom can be leveraged as a lecture capture solution in VCU classrooms equipped with cameras and microphones. Even in non-"hybrid" situations where no remote participants are involved, Zoom can be used to record video, audio and shared content to the Cloud for sharing and/or inclusion in Canvas course pages.
See "Record and Share Meetings" for more details on how to create your recordings. For a listing of resources available for use with Zoom in your assigned classroom, please visit the Classroom Technology page.
All told, over 160 teaching spaces at VCU are equipped to support Zoom as either a Standard Zoom Classroom or an Advanced Zoom Classroom.
In addition to Zoom, lectures presented in supported classroom can be recorded and automatically uploaded to VCU's Kaltura video server using Kaltura Classroom Capture, a software-based solution that leverages the same cameras and microphones Zoom would use, through the same podium-installed computer.
Which application you use is entirely up to you, but keep in mind that Kaltura Classroom Capture and Zoom will be in competition for the same resources, so they cannot be used simultaneously. If part or all of your class meeting will involve a connection to remote participants, be sure to use Zoom to record. Otherwise, either option is valid.
A limited number of classrooms are equipped with hardware devices for automated lecture capture. These devices can be scheduled to stop and start recordings without the need for any interaction from the instructor, and will record camera, audio and computer presentations for storage on the device and/or the Cloud.
The devices are owned and operated by various departments with support teams responsible for scheduling and/or initiating captures and ensuring the successful delivery of recordings to the Kaltura server (and their assignment to the correct owner/instructor), as well as Tier 1 troubleshooting. In some cases, the devices may be installed in classrooms that are open to use by multiple departments and schools, in which case any instructors interested in having their lectures captured should contact the owner department to be added to the schedule, if their policies permit it.
Media Support Services can help guide departments through the purchasing, installation and configuration of Lumens capture devices in teaching spaces. If interested, reach out to us at mssvideo@vcu.edu for more details.
Besides the supported Lumens devices, other hardware capture solutions currently in use in VCU classrooms include Echo Pro (Nursing and Dentistry) and Cattura CaptureCast (School of Medicine). These devices operate outside the support of MSS or Academic Technologies.
