Video Production Services
The Media Support Services (MSS) Video Production & Teleconferencing (VP&T) team produces broadcast quality audio/video recordings for University clients for instructional, informational, and documentary uses. Services include location production, camera studio production, computer-assisted post-production and live video streaming. Expand the sections at the bottom of this page for more details.
For all location and studio-based productions, MSS records to high-speed solid state drives. Non-linear video editing is performed using software capable of real-time filters, masks, special effects and transitions using multiple video tracks in concert with character-generation software for titles and sound editing software for audio tracks. Finished programs can be delivered in digital formats (including MP4, Flash, Windows Media, QuickTime or MPEG); burned to DVD or CD-ROM or posted to the Internet.

Room B-46 of James Branch Cabell Library functions as an operator-supported video production facility for recording lectures, interviews, dramatizations and other performances.
The room is equipped with robotic cameras operated by MSS technicians from an adjacent control booth, with additional inputs available for tripod-mounted production cameras. An Internet-connected PC is installed for the display and capture of PowerPoint shows or software demonstrations, and all content is displayed on a 70-inch, wall-mounted confidence monitor for the convenience of presenters. Multiple microphone jacks on the main stage allow for a variety of set designs to suit client needs, as does adjustable lighting in the ceiling and onstage, and a variety of color backdrops, including greenscreen.
Productions are digitally recorded to solid state drives for editing and completed projects can be delivered in multiple electronic formats as well as DVD and Blu-Ray, or streamed live via the Web.

Location-based video production is available to University clients who wish to film in outdoor or indoor settings, both on- and near-campus in the city of Richmond.
Media Support Services provide professional lighting, video, and audio capture using industry standard equipment including HD cameras; wired and wireless microphones and portable production switchers which enable live switching between multiple cameras, computer and audio inputs to be recorded and/or streamed live via the VCU video servers.
All video services are subject to staff availability. For productions staged in offices, classrooms or other public or private facilities, clients need to schedule the use of the space(s) with appropriate University officials.

Media Support Services provides live event streaming as part of its video production service offerings. Live streams can originate from our production studio or from locations on or near campus with sufficient internet access. Streams are delivered via the Kaltura video platform for real-time viewing on PCs, Macs and/or Android and iOS phones, tablets and other devices.
Among the events regularly streamed by MSS Video Production staff are the university's Spring and Fall Commencement ceremonies, Faculty Convocation and the President's State of the University address.
MSS staff assists clients in setting up viewing pages for their live events. On completion of the live stream, an "archive" video file of the event can be provided for on-demand viewing via Kaltura, YouTube and other video hosting platforms.
